Overview
When was the last time you really stopped and thought about how you think and behave? Most of us spend our days caught up in tasks, meetings, and deadlines, without pausing to consider how we show up for ourselves and those around us.
But here’s the thing—self-awareness is the foundation of personal growth and better performance, whether you’re leading a team or just navigating your day-to-day life.
At Human Synergistics, we often talk about self-awareness through the lens of the Life Styles Inventory™ (LSI) Circumplex. The Circumplex shows us how our thinking shapes our behaviour and impacts the people we interact with. By understanding where we are on the Circumplex, we can start to develop more constructive ways of thinking and behaving, both personally and professionally.

So, Why Is Self-Awareness So Important?
When you become more self-aware, you’re able to see which thinking styles you rely on most and how those styles are driving your behaviour. Are you pushing toward more Constructive thinking that helps you learn and grow, or do you find yourself stuck in Defensive patterns that might be holding you back?
Let’s break it down a little using the LSI Circumplex:
- Constructive Styles (Blue): These styles, Achievement, Self-Actualizing, Humanistic-encouraging and Affiliative help us perform at our best, build healthy relationships, and stay resilient in tough situations. When you’re aware of your Constructive styles, you can lean into them more, focusing on positive behaviours like setting goals, encouraging others, and staying open to feedback.
- Passive Defensive Styles (Green): These Styles, Avoidance, Conventional, Dependent and Approval can show up when we’re focused on playing it safe, pleasing others, or avoiding conflict. While these styles might feel comfortable in the short term, they usually prevent us from taking bold actions and growing.
- Aggressive Defensive Styles (Red): Styles like Competitive, Power, Perfectionistic and Oppositional thinking tend to focus on control, criticism, or pushing yourself too hard. While these might drive results temporarily, they often create stress, burnout, and conflict with others.
Self-Awareness: The Key to Moving Into the Blue
Self-awareness is all about recognising where you are on the Circumplex and understanding how your thinking affects your actions and results. The more you know about your thinking, the more you can shift toward the Constructive Styles that will help you be your best self.
Here’s why self-awareness matters:
You Control Your Own Narrative. Self-awareness puts you in the driver’s seat. When you’re tuned in to your thinking, you can catch yourself falling into Defensive patterns and make a conscious effort to shift. For example, if you notice you’re being too Perfectionistic (focusing on doing everything “just right”), you can step back and ask, “Is this really necessary?” or “How can I approach this in a more Constructive way?”
You Respond, Not React. When you’re aware of your triggers, you gain the ability to respond rather than react. Instead of snapping at someone because you feel pressured (hello, Oppositional), you can pause, recognise your feelings, and choose a more Constructive way to respond. This makes your interactions smoother and helps you build stronger relationships.
You Become a Better Leader. Leadership is all about influence—and to positively influence others, you need to be in tune with your own thinking and behaviour. Self-aware leaders are more empathetic, more adaptable, and better at motivating their teams. By being aware of how your behaviour impacts others, you can create an environment where people feel valued, supported, and ready to give their best.
You Open the Door to Growth. The more self-aware you are, the more opportunities you have to grow. You stop seeing feedback as criticism and start viewing it as a chance to learn and improve. Shifting from Avoidance or Approval to Achievement thinking means you start setting goals that align with your values and create a sense of purpose, rather than just doing what’s expected.
How Do You Build Self-Awareness?
Developing self-awareness isn’t about achieving perfection (remember, Perfectionistic thinking is a trap!). It’s about becoming curious about yourself and your behaviour patterns. Here are some ways to get started:
Reflect on Your Day: Take a few minutes at the end of each day to reflect on how you handled certain situations. Were you stuck in Defensive thinking, or did you lean into Constructive behaviour? What could you do differently next time?
Ask for Feedback: Sometimes, we have blind spots. Ask trusted colleagues or friends for feedback about how you come across. They can give you insight into behaviours you might not be aware of.
Use the LSI: The Life Styles Inventory™ is a great tool for understanding your thinking styles. It provides you with a clear picture of where you are on the Circumplex and gives you practical steps to move toward more Constructive behaviours.
Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness helps you stay present and aware of your thoughts without judgment. It allows you to catch Defensive patterns as they arise and create space to choose a different, more Constructive response.

Final Thoughts: Self-Awareness Is a Superpower
Self-awareness isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a powerful skill that can transform how you approach life and work. When you understand your thinking and how it affects your behaviour, you have the power to make intentional choices that drive better results. Whether you’re looking to be a better leader, build stronger relationships, or just feel more confident in your own skin, self-awareness is the key to unlocking your potential.
So, next time you find yourself feeling stuck, frustrated, or overwhelmed, take a moment to check in with your thinking. Are you stuck in Defensive patterns, or are you tapping into your Constructive strengths? The more aware you are, the more control you have to create the life and career you truly want.
