Most leadership development sounds good, but very little of it creates lasting change because it focuses on what leaders should do rather than why they do what they already do. At Human Synergistics New Zealand, we take a different approach by working at the level that actually drives performance, how leaders think. Thinking shapes behaviour, behaviour shapes culture, and culture drives results. Leaders do not usually struggle because they lack capability, but because default thinking patterns get in the way, leading to behaviours such as over controlling instead of empowering, avoiding instead of addressing, perfecting instead of progressing, and competing instead of collaborating. Telling someone to do better does not fix this. If the thinking stays the same, the behaviour will keep coming back.
