Our History

Founded in 1971, Human Synergistics has built an international reputation for innovation in organisational development, helping enterprises around the world support their people and improve performance through a focus on culture change, leadership development, and team effectiveness.

Today, Human Synergistics operates in more than 90 countries through a global network of practitioners and consulting partners, united by a shared focus on understanding how leadership thinking and behaviour shape organisational culture. Its diagnostics have been used to assess millions of leaders worldwide, providing deep insight into the behavioural patterns that influence performance.

Dr J. Clayton Lafferty

1971

A pioneer in the psychology of achievement and human effectiveness, Dr J. Clayton Lafferty founded Human Synergistics in Chicago, Illinois.

Dr Robert A Cooke

1972

From the beginning, Organisational Cultural exper Dr Robert A Cooke ph.D worked with Dr Lafferty to develop and refine the Circumplex, a visual model for measuring and progressing Constructive styles in individuals, managers, leaders, teams, and organisations.

1979

Our current ANZ Chair Shaun McCarthy, along with business partners Roy Lynch and Michael Gourley, set up the New Zealand business in 1979, the first outside of the USA.

1989

Shaun and his business partners introduced Human Synergistics to Australia in 1989. The Accreditation Programme began in 1997, and in 2015 our Client centric office in North Sydney opened its doors under the leadership of David Byrum who currently serves as the Managing Director.

2026

Today we work with organisations large and small from our offices in 18 countries around the globe. Our mission is at the forefront of everything we do, to change the world - one organisation at a time!
